Indian Canyon Park is a secluded area, not far from downtown Spokane. In years past, the Upper Band of the Spokan Indian Tribe wintered here. It is also the site of Spokan Chief Garry's last homestead. Shunned by Indians and ostracized by whites, Garry and his wife Nina, spent their last years in a tepee near Indian Canyon Falls.

Here is a link to a free USGS map of Indian Canyon Park:

Follow the instructions to download and print a nice-sized map of the area that you can take with you.

There is a little parking at the park gate, located across the road from the 8th tee of Indian Canyon Golf Course. Past the gate, follow the road to a bench made out of a log. You can get a better view of the falls by walking along the east side of the canyon.

From the log bench continue on the road that leads to the west side of the canyon. Stay on the main road until you see on the left, an old sign that tells about Chief Garry--at about .4 miles. Climb up the embankment and walk past and behind this sign. Further northwest you'll find another smaller and newer sign marking the spot where Garry put his tepee. Notice a large circle dug down in the earth. This gave Garry additional protection from the wind. There are pine trees growing in the circle now.

From this newer sign you'll see 2 boulders due north. Once you reach the boulders, locate a stately Ponderosa at 309°. On the north side of the fallen brother, at an adolescent upstart, and among gnarled arms, the Chief can be found.
