Welcome to Mad Sam the Pirate’s Hitch Hiker Hostel. It is a place where treasure may be found…(depending on whether anyone has dropped off a hitch hiker recently)!
Mad Sam’s has been placed exclusively to drop off and pick up hitch hikers (particularly larger hitch hikers). The hostel is for anyone to use. Feel free to drop hitch hikers off or see if there is one that you can take out of town.
There is a stamp of Mad Sam in the box that should stay there. Please don’t take it by mistake. There is no logbook . So...go visit Mad Sam the Pirate, scourge of the Rappahannock!

***NEW LOCATION*** ***NEW LOCATION*** ***NEW LOCATION***

Mad Sam decided to move his pirate lair to Loriella Park!

To get to Loriella Park:
From I 95 take Exit 130 B for Rt. 3 West, Culpeper. On exit ramp, get into left lane. Be aware. This area can get congested with Rt. 3 traffic shifting lanes to the right to get into Central Park, while you are trying to move left to get onto Rt. 3.

On Rt. 3 go to the 6th light (Salem Church Rd.) and turn left. This road will lead you to the park. After the 3rd light on Salem Church Rd.(CVS on corner) the road becomes Leavells Rd. Continue straight.

After passing two schools on your right, the park will appear down the road on the right. Turn into the park and follow the road back to its end. Park in the swimming pool parking lot.

***Bent Tree Boxes are also in this park.***

This is the former location of the Martin the Warrior box. Martin will be getting a new home this spring.

1. From the parking lot, walk back behind Shelter B by the playground. You will see a sign and opening for the Creekside Trail.

2. Go downhill on the trail. Turn left on the second trail that comes in on your left. It is just past the skinny tree with the orange blaze. Do not go down to the T intersection.

3. Walk until you come to a trail coming in from the left. There will be a skinny tree with an orange blaze on the left.

4. Turn left and walk uphill past another skinny tree with an orange blaze that is on the right.

5. Go past the trail that comes in from the left. Continue on until you come to a large tree on the right with an orange blaze. UPDATE:(The blaze has worn off pretty much. Look for holly trees on the right side of the trail. The holly trees are just a bit before the tree you need. Also , there is now an uprooted tree wedged on another tree at an angle in the air off the path on the right. The way to the box goes under it. For safety, go around the root end of the tree and not under it. Who knows how sturdy the tree holding it up is?)

6. Stand with your nose on the orange blaze (not literally!) and turn to the right. Go off trail about 26 steps to a large straight tree. Mad Sam is around the back of the tree.
