This series is planted at Kickapoo state recreation area. If you are from out of town and don't know where this is, take I-74 to Exit 206, go north and follow the signs.

Difficulty: moderate-difficult. The park marks the trail these boxes are on as “hard”. I do not think this trail is particularly hard, but it does involve a lot of hills and all of the boxes are fairly well off the path and involve going through underbrush and/or very steep hills. The second box especially requires some bushwhacking (literally, just don't whack the bushes too hard) to retrieve. The trail is also in a part of the park that may be closed to vehicular traffic during the winter. If the gates are closed, you can walk down the road (about a mile) to the parking area or walk down the road to the Walnut Shelter and take trail 16 through the woods which is probably about the same distance but a more scenic hike. I tried to avoid any dangerous plants, but there are brambles on the way to some of the boxes although they should be avoidable. I'm fairly sure there isn't any poision ivy near these boxes but it does grow in this region so keep an eye out just in case. As this is central IL, always do a tick check after walking through wooded areas. Bug spray will help keep the ticks off as well as the mosquitoes.

CLUES:

Park in the High Pond/No Name Pond parking area. Walk to the turnabout at the far end and from there take either of the marked trails. Where the trails intersect, take the narrower trail. As you come to the top of the rise, make your way off the trail to the left where there is a little ridge. Follow this ridge until you come to a bare white tree laying across the trail. Looking towards the base of this tree at the bottom of the slope you will see a break in the log about half way between where the tree intersects the trail and the bottom. Tucked into this break under the top of the lower half you will find the "A" box covered by a rock and some bark.

Find your way back to the trail and continue the way you were going. After the roller coaster, the trail will rise again and then drop sharply to the right. In the middle of this turn, stop and turn your back to the trail in front of you. Make your way along the little "valley" through the underbrush until you come to the base of a fallen tree. There, tucked into the hollow of the fallen log under some leaves and twigs, lies the "I" box.

Return to the trail and follow it along the ridge, down under the arch, and around the corner. Soon the trail will almost level out for a short while. At the rise just before your next descent turn back and look back along the trail and to the left for a large multi-trunked tree. Make your way to the base of this tree and, standing with your back to the path, look to your right. Follow either the ridge or the valley to the smooth, barkless fallen tree crossing the valley. The "NA" box is tucked away under some leaves and a flat stone As this is a micro-box without an inner baggie, please be sure to reseal and rehide it well.

Make your way back to the trail and continue down the hill. Follow the trail through the thick underbrush on either side and up to a wide gravel path. Turn right onto this path and continue around the bend. Just around the bend will be three trees on a crest overlooking the water. A little farther down the path is a large bush to the left of the trail. Carefully make your way through the underbrush just on the other side of this large bush to three small trees all in a line overlooking High Pond. Before you get to these trees, stop at the maple to the right. Look past the maple for a beaver-chewed stump. A little further down the way and to the right of this stump stands another beaver-chewed tree. You will find the "Dog" box at it's base under a chunk of wood that looks rather out of place next to the blackened stump. Please be sure to double bag the logbook as there has been moisture in the box the last two times I've checked on it and I have had to temporarily pull this box in order to dry out a damp logbook.

Please re-hide these boxes well and make sure that the bags and lids are all securely sealed. Good luck and happy hunting!
