Wild West Series #6 is the Arrowhead. Every year we visit the Illinois River. There are certain areas on the river that arrowheads can be found. This area is rich with Native American history. I have personally found 4 arrowheads on the river. I have also found some wonderful fossils in this area.

To find the arrowhead you will venture to Sparrowhawk Primitive Area on Highway 10 along the Illinois River. This area is beautiful and takes about an hour to hike. You will hike uphill about a third of a mile to reach the bluff that overlooks the river. This hike is not too tough. The first 70 yards or so is the steepest and roughest.

First you will head north on Highway 10 outside of Tahlequah. You will drive 1.8 miles until you see a sign that reads Sparrow Hawk Primitive Area. Take a right on the dirt road and go about a quarter of a mile to the Primitive Area parking lot.

Be sure to take a camera, water and possibly a snack for the hike. Once you find the box, I suggest you follow the trail another quarter mile to the bluffs. It is an incredible view.

Next you will take the path to the left. You can take the one on the right if you are a little more adventurous. Just stay to the left and it will join the main path at the top. Follow the main path until you reach marker 11. You will know you are there by the incredible view. During the summer this area is lush and the walk is shaded. Stop here to take photos. Then take the path to the right down and up the hill. You will come to a split in the path. Take the right path and approximately 75 paces you will see a tree with a sitting branch. It looks like the perfect seat. At its base is an unnatural pile of rocks. Look beneath them to find the Arrowhead. Be careful of the natural habitat of snakes and other critters.
