Washington on the Brazos State Park
Near Washington, TX

Difficulty: Relatively flat, grassy or dirt trails.

This letterbox commemorates the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on this site on March 2, 1836. At the same time as the Alamo was falling, delegates from all over Texas joined together to establish the republic through this important document. Learn more by touring the visitors center at the park.

Directions:
From Navasota take Highway 105 West for 7 miles, turn left on FM1155
to Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Park. From Brenham take
Highway 105 East for 14 miles, turn right on FM 912 to the Park.

Clues:
From the visitor's center, take the trail to Independence Hall. Turn right and head toward the River Overlook. Just before the overlook, turn left. When you reach the junction with the pond, you can go right to get the Washington on the Brazos and the Texas Flag letterboxes. However, for the Power of the Pen, turn left at the blue sign post (back toward Independence Hall). 70 steps along the trail, just past the picnic benches, you should see a tree leaning toward the trail. Behind that leaner is a downed tree. Power of the Pen is next to this downed tree, wedged in the vee where the trunk separates into two main large branches.

Take usual precautions and make sure to rehide well.
