Location: Stissing Mountain Fire Tower
Elevation: 1370'
Tower: 79', erected in 1933
Difficulty: Steep and rocky hike. Not recommended for the very young
In Pine Plains take Lake Road from either Route 199 or Route 82. Drive to about the midway point and park in small pull-off area on east side of road with wooden post reading "FOSL Lake Road Trail Head". Cross road to begin a very steep climb up mountain following the green and blue oak leaf trail markers.
Trail will turn left and level off a bit for the rest of the climb. Keep climbing to Y in trail with rock cairn. Trail makes a loop so pick a direction. The trail to the right is a little longer and less steep. This trail has yellow markers.
Follow either trail to the fire tower which has been restored and open to the public. After climbing the tower and enjoying the view take a reading of 250 degrees and walk 30 steps down this trail to a natural rock outcropping on left. Take 22 steps along rock wall to three stacked smooth faced rocks. Move small reddish rock to find your prize! Please seek and rehide carefully as site is visible from trail. Pick a direction along the loop trail to return to your car.
