Sorry,but this letterbox was destroyed by flooding in early 2006. Consider Ultra 2 which is along the same trail.

Directions: From I-64 take VA 624 to Lyndhurst. Bear left onto rt. 664 and continue to the entrance of Sherando Lake Recreation Area* on the right. Take the entrance road through the campground to the upper lake. Park in the lot near the Group Campground. Walk back down the road and cross the gate into the field. You will be hiking on the White Rock Gap Trail. Cross the field towards the white flood marker and you will soon see a trail marker that will point you in the correct direction.
*(Note that there is an entrance fee Memorial through Labor Day. You may avoid the fee by hiking from the western end of the trail, which is on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A trailhead parking area is opposite the White Rock Falls Trail about 0.7 miles south of “The Priest” overlook. The letterbox would be about 1.5 miles down from this end of the trail.)

This is a beautiful trail that climbs to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It parallels the North Fork of Back Creek, crossing intermittent streams (depending on the season). To find the letterbox follow the trail for about 1 mile. As the trail becomes a flat roadbed through mountain laurel, look for a large dirt mound on the right. (If you cross a stream with a large hemlock, you have gone too far.)

Two sapling stumps, upon a mound;
From trail, look towards them both.
When one lines up behind the first
A tree in the distance lurks.

Take twenty paces towards the tree
Resembling the letter, “Y”,
And round the back, amidst the rocks,
The hidden letterbox lies.

When it was hid, in early spring,
A tortoise shell was found
And left to guard this special spot.
We hope it’s still around.
