DIRECTIONS: Not just for LOTR fans or those with furry toes, the Hobbit Trail is a popular location for a leisurely hike to a pristine and relatively private beach. About ten miles north of Florence park on the EAST side of Hwy101 (between Heceta Head Lighthouse and Carl G. Washburne State Park). There is nothing visible from the road to indicate why the small parking lot is populated with cars. CAREFULLY cross Hwy 101. The trail begins just slightly north of the parking lot. A few yards along you will come to a fork and a sign “Hobbit Beach ½ mi” and “Heceta Lighthouse 1 ½ mi.
Choose Hobbit Beach Trail.

CLUES: Crawl out of your cozy hole and go over the hill and across the water on an adventure into Middle Earth. These are clues to the first 2 boxes. If you are clever enough to find the One Ring of Power and outsmart Gollum at a Riddle Game you will receive clues to the 3rd box and thereby earn your share of the dragon’s hoard.
As with all letterboxes, PLEASE seal securely, rehide well and be discreet.

Box #1: This forest pathway is named after the furry-toed gnome-like characters in J.R.R. Tolkien's works. As you enter you'll feel like a hobbit, peering up at the high walls of woven roots, peat, and sand that loom above the trail. Follow the trail descending thru dense forest thickets of pine, fir, and wild rhododendrons. Pass the huge old tree on the left that divides like a giant wishbone and make a wish for a safe and successful journey. Continue on past the (now dry) streambed until you descend into a tunnel of sand and roots. On the right side you will notice a wall of round rocks. It might be lucky for you to look behind the top-most rock on the far right side.

Box #2: Continue thru tunnel till it opens onto the beach and head NORTH. Are you ready to challenge Gollum in a Riddle Game? He’s watching for you with his pale eyes and talking to himself. “Bless us and splash us my preciousss!” I smell a human coming up our beach. Its walking this way past all the runes etched on the cliffs. It comes to the first stream running across the beach all the way to the sea but doesn’t want to get its feetsies wet does it, my preciousss. Well no need, it can just look up high on the ledge. Now it sees the distorted tree with giant claw like roots. Its eyes follow the largest root curving out, downward and to the right. Praps it’s going to find me hiding way to the right of where the root again touches the earth. Way back behind the criss-cross tangle of branches on the high ledge under a rock. “Praps ye sits here and chats with it a bitsy, my preciousss. Praps it likes riddles, praps it does, does it?” Now you need to answer a riddle to find your way to the treasure.

What has roots that nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes
And yet never grows?

No, it won’t stop and play with us, my precious, it just stamps the books, steals a paper with secret clues to Box #3 and escapes quickly before any goblinses sees it, it does.
