In 1930's, plans were drawn up to dam the Mosquito Creek under the Federal Flood Control Act to alleviate floods on the Mahoning, Beaver and Ohio rivers. The dam would also provide domestic water supply for the city of Warren and pollution abatement as a result of the industrialized steel production along the Mahoning River. Completed in April 1944, the dam's capacity held 34 billion gallons of water covering 7,850 acres of land. In 1946. the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers entered into an agreement with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to manage the recreation on the lake.

Water recreation, hiking, camping and picnicking attract visitors to Mosquito Lake, one of the largest lakes in Ohio. Mature woodlands and vast marshes provide safe haven for wildlife and will delight nature enthusiasts.

DIRECTIONS: St. Rt. 305 East travel over the damn to stop sign. Turn Left. Approx. 100 yards on the left you will find Lakeview Recreational Area. From St. Rt. 305 West look for Lakeview Recreational Area on your right.

Clues: Pull into parking area of Lakeview Recreational Area. Look for sign that says Lakeview Nature Trail. This is located behind and to the left of the restrooms. Take the path to the left until you come to a sign that says overlook. It will be to your right. Take that path until you spot a bench at the waterside. If you look out accross the water you will see a pole with a platform. Atop is the Osprey nest. To find the box turn your back on the nest and walk forward a few steps. To your left you will see a sign that explains how to identify poision ivy. Please review as this may come in useful for searching for other boxes in the future. To your right you will see a tree with two fallen logs underneath it. Walk into the clearing beneath the tree making sure to duck low beneath its branches. Where the two logs cross you will find the letter box under some bark.

Once the box is located, you can take the path back the way you came, or you may take the path that goes straight out. Both will take you to your original starting point.

Items to have: Boots if it has been raining. The path is mainly gravel but it can have some muddy areas. Binoculars for viewing the Osprey nest, and of course hehehehe Mosquito spray. Have fun and enjoy the beauty of this area. Good luck!!!

The walk is easy and takes approximately 25 mins.

Please be sure to place all items back into the box and carefully hide it again. If you find the box is not in good order or missing please contact me at imdurangogirl@aol.com
