Upon visiting a simply wonderful letterbox “Dourown Petroglyph Panel Box” planted by Kat during the Moab Box on the Rocks gathering I decided to place a box near hers for a extra fun find. The directions are borrowed from her box clues since I am not familiar with the street names in the area.

From downtown Moab, head south to the intersection with McDonalds and Burger King. Turn right, this is Kane Creek Blvd. Follow this to the left when you come to the intersection of Kane Creek and 500 West. This road will turn and meander along the river a little ways. The road will turn into graded, unpaved road as it turns and heads up the canyon. It should be suitable for 2-wheel drive in most conditions.

Your starting point will be around 5.3 miles from the intersection of Kane Creek and 500 West. Just around the bend from the Amasa Back Trailhead (signs mark this), look for a large boulder about 75 feet off the road. It is covered with petroglyphs that are easily seen from the road. There is a pullout just past it. Park here. If you drive and get to a section of switchbacks, turn around and go back, you've gone to far.

The large boulder that you have discovered is called the Birthing Rock. Please be sure not to touch this magnificant stone with your hands as the oils in our skin are harmful to the art on the rock. After viewing the large art work on the front of the stone go around the left side and look carefully for the two figures that appear to be warriors. Look to the bottom of the rock below them and tucked underneath behind a few small stones is “Kokopelli’s Hole in One.”

This box was placed during the Box on the Rocks Moab Gathering and a few people have already logged into the journal. However, the first finder artifact is waiting for the “real” first finder. Should you note the box missing, it’s contents in bad repair or if you just want to say hi please contace me at Blackvelvetrav@yahoo.com. Happy hunting!
