Monsters of NY – Series 5 of 6 – Phantom Cat

(Currently Missing)
Sorry. Apparently the tree it was in practically disintegrated. We will look into replacing it.

Phantom cats have been reported all over the US, killing household pets, livestock or the occasional human being before vanishing into the wilderness. In Western NY, they have been sighted from the Allegheny region to Buffalo. A good place to hunt for them is in wilderness areas near reported sightings.

Originally placed by JeLyBean, it was confirmed lost. A replacement was sent to Dagonell the Pirate, and it has been replanted by the Quinn Clan.

(Quinn Clan Note:This was probably the first box we didn’t find, but Stiglmeier Park was so beautiful we didn’t even care. The wild life here is so used to humans that deer will come right up to you during your walk through the park. That's why we were so willing to volunteer to replant it.
We followed JeLyBean’s original directions most of the way because it takes you along a great trail. The “cat’s” new home should be less susceptible to the elements and general decay.)

Terrain: Easy
Clues: Easy

Directions to Park:
The entrance you want is off of Como Park Blvd. in Cheektowaga.

Como Park Blvd. starts at Union Road (Rte 277) about halfway between Broadway and William St. and heads east.

Quickest route I found is to get off of Thruway (I90) at Williams St. and head east (away from Buffalo). Williams ends at Union Road. Go left onto Union, first light after the turn is Bennett. Make a right and follow Bennett until it merges with Como Park Blvd, bearing right. From there it’s only a short ride till you cross Cayuga Creek and the Park entrance is on your right. Just park on the shoulder and enter the park by foot.

Clues:

After you enter the park look for a sign on your right for Cayuga Trail and follow it as it winds its way toward Cayuga Creek.

At the first intersection, choose either path, as they will meet back up again. When the path reaches the creek it bends left onto a boardwalk. Continue to follow this path along the creek. It will cross over a few small wooden bridges and a few more boardwalks.

The creek starts curving to the right just as you reach a clearing. There is a ‘Y’ in the path here. Follow the path closest to the creek. When you come to the next intersection, there will be a signpost. Take Trail 9, (to the right) and your almost there. You can actually see your destination from here.

This next section of path is more or less straight. Just as the trail is about to head into a small curving section you’ll see a very large tree on the creek side. One of its branches has reached down to the ground, forming an arch over a small path that leads down to the creek.

This is a low hanging branch, so duck down under it, or limbo if you like, to get to the other side. Now, turn around, and look back at the branch. You’ll see that it is open and looks a bit like an alligator’s open jaw. Reach into the mouth of the beast, (towards the trunk section), and you will find your prize.
