Trail Riddle #2

This is a short walk (took grandson, 20-month-old Riley along for the planting) at Rockland Preserve in North Madison. This is a different trail entrance than for my other series in the preserve. Take 79 North in Madison, 3.7 miles form the Routes 79 and 80 “circle.” If you are headed north, take a left onto Dorset. The third right is Devonshire – take it. Continue down Devonshire to the second right, Renee’s Way. At the end of the cul de sac, find parking by the trailhead sign.

There is one logbook for this series of 3. Toddler friendly!

Pass the gate and go down the woods road, marked with both red and white. Don’t take any of the white trails to the right; continue until you pass a brown shed on the right and come to a major intersection area. Head right, on the trail marked with red and yellow. Soon you will come to a major erratic on your left. Beyond it is a group of other glacial remains; look behind the largest for the "riddle."
The area "burned" soon after the box was place. We replaced it 6/8/05, and included a logbook. I think kids were "smoking" in the area!

A few steps ahead, make a sharp right and head toward the white blazes ahead (red continues to the left, but ignore that), passing a small brown outhouse. Soon you come to a pond view and amphitheater/outdoor classroom area. Continue by going right, on white, just past the large rock. A few steps up, bear left on white (not right, to outhouse, unless needed!). Soon again, keep right to stay on white. Cross over one fallen log, then a second log. See a rock on the right with a skinny stump behind it? Look inside for the riddle "answer."

Continue to the Y junction of white trails – go right. Stay on white until it joins red and take that back to the parking lot. For the "laugh," go 230 degrees from the left edge of the trailhead sign. Pass a triple tree, to a group of rocks. Look in a “cave” for the final box!

There are lots more interesting trails here, including part of the Blue Trail system. Expect more boxes!

Thanks to Riley, Butterfly, and the Lady and the Whippet for the planting assistance!
