NOTICE: 8/07 THE LOVELY SHOP THAT HELD THIS BOX HAS WENT OUT OF BUSINESS TAKING THE BOX WITH IT. I WILL CONSIDER RECARVING THIS STAMP AND FINDING A NEW HOME FOR IT.

Known by three other names this Marshall County town was once called Union Town and Marmont. The original plat of Union Town was dated June 8, 1844. The name was then changed to Marmont in 1851 to honor a French general. In 1895 the town was changed again to Culver City after St. Louis Industrialist, Henry Harrison Culver. He had played prominent part in the establishment of the Military Academy that is on the grounds adjoining the city. The proposition for the change of the name met with universal approval among the people, but the post office department at Washington refuse to recognize the name as there was already a town by that name in Tippecanoe County. Also the word "City" had been eliminated from all towns bearing that annex to the regular name. Henry Harrison Culver went to the town in Tippecanoe County and pursued negotiations which finally brought about the changing of the name of that town to "Crane". Using the middle name of Moses Crane Culver, operator of the grain elevator there. Then papers were properly made out and filed with the post office department changing the name from Marmont to Culver.
