Currently there is a problem trying to get to this box without the possibility of creating an issue because of recent vandalism to the old passenger car awaiting restoration at this site. Police have picked up watch and neighbors have been encouraged to report "suspicious activity" near the train cars, so I am making this box temporarily unavailable -- again -- until this all dies down and it is once more safe to explore the cars and find this box. This is one of my oldest letterboxes and one of my very first stamps, and it's still one of my favorites! I don't want it to be discovered or lost (or for a finder to be arrested or hassled, either!) It will be made available as soon as possible. -- Viewfinder

Locomotive No. 9920, one of the classical “E” units of the Burlington Northern railroad, went online in July, 1954, and provided commuter passenger service throughout Texas, the Midwest, and Chicago until being phased out in September 1992. Donated by Burlington Northern Santa Fe to the City of Keller, this engine now sits on a short track in Keller, Texas, a reminder of Keller’s origins. Along with the diesel engine are two freight cars and a soon-to-be-renovated passenger car.

The Texas and Pacific Railroad between Fort Worth and Texarkana was completed in April 1881, and the first train ran on this track on May 9, 1881. With the advent of rail service, new villages were established all along the line. The Keller of today was one of them. With railroad service, Keller began to prosper as a trade center for the surrounding farm community.

Directions

To find the Whistle Stop Spur in Keller, turn west off Keller S. Main Street (Hwy 377) at W. Vine, 3 blocks south of FM 1709 (Keller Parkway). You’ll see the engine immediately in front of you at the end of the block. Parking is available north of the engine, or park along the curb next to the track.

Clue

Read the City of Keller “Whistle Stop Spur” sign. After looking around the engine, walk along the freight cars behind the engine. Look for the car marked “ATSF 601063” and walk to the end of this car, checking out the huge springs over the wheels. On the west side of the car at the rear, particularly notice those springs, and look above them to find what you seek tucked into a crevice above the springs. Please be careful not to be observed and replace this letterbox just as you found it.
