Replaced with original stamp on 5/15/2016 by Hiking Vikings - Clues are almost completely same as original.
Placed by Team Tolkien consisting of Moonkyst, Timekeeper, Captain X and The Wind was Here, for the Educating Our Own letterboxing class. This is a short hike of less than 1/4 mile.
Shadowfax
"That is Shadowfax. He is the chief of the Mearas, lords of horses . . . . Does he not shine like silver, and run as smoothly as a swift stream?"
Gandalf heard that Shadowfax was at Morgan Run Natural Environmental Area (off of Maryland Route 97, south of Westminster, http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/morganrun.html).
At the edge of a large gravel field, Gandalf encountered a closed gate. From that gate, he traveled across 42 stony hills to the right. From the 42nd hill with a flat top he
paused to look about. He left the rocky perch at a bearing of 42 degrees, and ventured approximately 114 steps down the wide grassy path. Then, following a bearing at approximately 150 degrees, a
three-in-one tree beckoned him from the path. He followed the moss at the foot of the tree to a narrow "bridge" that took him at 150 degrees across the leafy terrain, and further away from the wide grassy path. Gandalf made his way to a knobby tree and whistled for Shadowfax. Glancing at a bearing of 230 degrees, he spotted his loyal steed
sheltered at the base of another three-in-one tree.
"As soon as Shadowfax saw Gandalf, he checked his pace and whinnied loudly; then trotting gently forward he stooped his proud head and nuzzled his great nostrils against the old man's neck."
Notes:
