Yet another of my boxes to disappear; it will not be replaced. Don't go looking for it. You will not find it. But by all means, go visit the museum!

The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry (BIMP) preserves, documents and exhibits puppets from around the world from its collection of thousands of items, notably puppets designed and created by Frank Ballard and the students of the Puppet Arts program at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Ballard, for whom BIMP is named, created the puppetry program at UConn, the only one in the country that offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in puppetry. The museum opened in 1996 to honor the award-winning works of Dr. Ballard, and the wonderful diversity of an art that has entertained, enlightened, educated and enchanted people of all ages world-wide for millenia.

This box is an easy drive-up that you will find in mere seconds but you should come on a day when the museum is open to enjoy the treasures inside as well as the one in the box. The museum is open from April to November, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5:00 PM. This year’s exhibit will have its grand opening on April 29, 2007 at 12:00 PM. There is a suggested donation of $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for kids, students and seniors.

To the Museum: The Puppet Museum is on the UConn Depot Campus (formerly the Mansfield Training School) off Route 44 in Storrs. It is northwest of the main campus and about 45 minutes from Hartford. Traveling west on Rte. 44, look for Weaver Rd. on the left, 2.1 miles from the Rte. 195 Junction. If you are headed east, Weaver Rd. is on the right, one-half mile from the Rte. 32 junction, after 2 traffic lights. A building directory marks the entrance to Weaver Rd. Follow Weaver Rd. until it comes to a cluster of “cottages” on the right. The museum gallery is located in the Willimantic Cottage and the Library and Institute are next to it in the Mansfield Cottage. Colorful signs and banners will welcome you to BIMP.

To find the box: Pull into the parking lot, where you can clearly see the names of the 2 buildings, Willimantic and Mansfield. Bimp ( the museum’s mascot) seems to beckon to you from the museum building and will usher you to a seat under Pinocchio's nose. Look straight ahead to a line of four bushes. Can you see what you seek?

Enjoy the museum!
