Updated 10-15-2005 OFFUTT'S, SMITH, and NORRIS REPLANTED (again)

Navigating Rush County roads is easy once you get your bearings (a good map, a compass, a sunny day and a convertible come in handy also). Rush County is mostly flat and the roads are grid lines marked off from the center of the county. For more precise directions visit: http://www.countyhistory.com/coveredbridge/start.html

It took us about 2 hours to place the boxes and we knew what we were doing and only got lost once.

The Kennedy family of bridge builders lived, died and are buried in Rush County. Their descendants still live here, and Rush County is proud of the Kennedys and the six remaining covered bridges.

The Kennedy family constructed at least 58 covered bridges, only 13 of which are still standing. Rush County at one time had 19 Kennedy bridges, six of which are still standing. The Kennedy bridges are similar in appearance and are especially admired on account of their ornamentation. The basic construction was finely crafted.

The five standing Kennedy Bridges are:

BOX ONE - The Forsythe Bridge (southwest quadrant 450 W @ 650 S) – The box is inside the bridge in the southwest corner in the little space where the road meets the bridge.

* The Mud Creek Bridge Barn (no box here) (on private property after washing away in a flood years ago and converted into a barn near Homer)

BOX TWO - The Moscow Bridge (southwest quadrant on Skating Rink Road near 620 W and 900 S) – The box is in the middle of the bridge. On the north wall in the center where the western arch meets the upright – it is covered with leaves.

BOX THREE - The Offutt's Ford Bridge (northwest quadrant on Offutt’s Ridge Road near 450 W and 300 N) – Standing with your back to the bronze plaques take a reading of 80 degrees walk in this direction to the guard rail. What you seek is tucked behind the upright I (you'll have to move the small rocks). (2nd box planted 10-15-05)

BOX FOUR - The Smith Bridge (northeast quadrant on 150 N @ between Fort Wayne Road and 200 E) – We borrowed this idea from a geocache box located nearby. Check out the guard rail on the east end on the south side, another I, NOT the first one, but the second. (2nd box planted 10-15-05)

BOX FIVE - The Norris Ford Bridge (northeast quadrant on 300 N @ between 150 E and 240 E) – The box is in the bridge where the burr arch on the north side meets the uprights and diagonals on the west end. Look for it in this dark crevice covered with leaves. (3rd box planted 10-15-05)

One other Kennedy Bridge washed away in a flood and is used as a barn near Homer, Indiana (no box there).

Final Note: The Ferree Bridge was the first Kennedy bridge built in Rush County, but was sadly destroyed by arson in 1989 - a reward is still being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.
