This box is along the Pine Canyon Trail in the Tonto National Forest. The box is at about 5400 feet elevation; so, there is a possibility that there might be some snow on it during the Winter! From Payson go north on State Highways 87 & 260 to the Pine Trailhead on the east side of the highway. It is about 0.6 mile north of Milepost 266 and about 1 mile south of the town of Pine. There is a large brown sign identifying it. Drive in and park at the trailhead.
Go to the trailhead at the east edge of the parking lot. Walk east/northeast on the Arizona Trail, passing through a gate, and continue walking for about 1/4 mile to a trail junction (the AZ Trail continues straight and the Pine Canyon Trail #26 turns left). Turn left on the Pine Canyon Trail and walk for about 280 steps to a large double-trunk Juniper Tree on the left side of the trail. From this Juniper, continue up the trail for about 30 steps to where you see another Juniper Tree just below the left side of the trail. From this point on the trail, go at about 66 degrees (from mag. north) for about 36 steps up slope to an Oak Tree in a rock outcrop. There is a Juniper Tree a few feet down slope from it. From the east side of the Oak Tree, go at about 78 degrees up slope for about 39 steps to a medium size Juniper Tree (there is a tall Pine Tree to its left and a sawed-off stump behind it). The box is behind the Juniper Tree under a flat rock covered with some plant debris.
Please, please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag) and put all of it INSIDE the box. Please rehide the box well under the rock and cover it with some twigs and plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.
