History:In the late 1800s Laura Gozenbach spoke with Italian peasants to gather their stories. Unfortunately, she died young, and many of her papers were destroyed in the 1909 earthquake. "The Robber with a Witch's Head" was one of the stories collected and saved.

Now, there once was a Robber who lived alone in a wild region of wilderness. Townsfolk who lived nearby called the woods "Hoeffen Master."

The Robber was very evil and powerful because he had in his keeping a magic Witch’s Head.

Some years before, the Robber murdered an old Witch and chopped off her head. Then using her magics, he wrought a spell on the severed head that gave it the power to speak and to be "all knowing." So it was the Witch’s Head that helped him to succeed in everything he did.

It is said by the townsfolk that the Robber, after consulting each day with the Witch’s Head, hides it in a basket deep in the forest. Then he leaves for the day and does evil unto all those who live in the nearby towns.

Many have dreamt of stealing the Witch’s Head for their own foul deeds, others want to rid the land of evil by depriving the Robber of his magical Head.

Those in search of the Witch’s Head are only the most courageous--and some say foolhardy--adventurers.

Follow the road that leads through the woods till you see the sign for the Picnic Area/Organization Camp. (This sign was placed by the Robber to trick you into thinking this a friendly spot for a picnic.) Turn left into area and tie up your horse, now you must go on foot further down past the picnic area, till you come to the turn around. At the curve you will see a Devil tree next to a path. Take this path into the woods.

Your path will come to a "T" go left not right. Hop over the fallen tree in the path. Now go up...then down...up then down...up then down, down, down.

When going down, you may notice some arrows. Follow in the direction of the the first two that you see. Pay no attention to the others, don't get led astray.
Head in the direction the arrows and path pointed you. Sadly, your path will soon disappear, no matter, keep heading through the trees, straight ahead.

Not far at all, you will see two large, magnificent trees. One to the right and one to the left. Keep going and deja vu. Two more magnificent trees! On the right, one that is thick and many armed and, to the left a large, hollowed beauty. The one to the left, is where, you will find "The Witch's Head."

To get back to your horse turn these directions upside-down.
