AJ’S Box

Location: Old Jail Lane Conservation area
Stamp: Hand carved
Terrain: wooded trails
Distance of walk: less than 5 minutes to box, more if you want to walk the trail
Warning: Poison Ivy on this trail
Dogs: welcome on a leash…check for ticks

Directions: Route 6 Take exit 6 and head towards Hyannis this is route 132 (left off exit from east and right off exit from west) Turn left at first set of lights (Barnstable police station Phinney’s lane) Straight through set of lights (hadaway rd) Take a left onto Old Jail Lane just after you go under the over passes (route 6) (1 mile from the fist lights you turn at) .5 mile on the left is the entrance to the Old Jail Lane Conservation Area (across from a big yellow house on a hill)

This box was planted for my son, AJ. May 2, 2003 we went for a walk on this trail as we did often on this trail as well as others. To make a long story really short…he ran up over a hill, way ahead and disappeared. I was with my mother as well and we had to call 911. Barnstable Police was there within minutes. Complete with dogs, and ATVs. AJ was found about 30 minutes after taking off. He had run off the trail and was very close to where the conservation area backs up to route 6. He was fine…very scratched up…covered in ticks and a little shaken up as well. He was 3 ½ at the time (even though the article says he was 2 1/2) till this day, when we walk on any trail and he runs ahead…I tell him, “remember when you got lost? Do you want to get lost again?” He tends to stay close. So to all you little ones…stay close to your grownup any time you’re out walking or letterboxing. We don’t want anymore lost children.(The article and pictures from the Cape Cod Times are in the box)

Directions to the box: walk down the road from the parking area. Please be respectful of the 2 houses you will pass. Walk into the trail till you get to the Y. go left and find the double trunked oak on the left side. (Just before a large pine) Find AJ’s Box on the right of the tree marked with a rock.

This trail does loop around but I haven’t been out there in 2 yrs and today just went far enough to plant the box…I’m sure you understand.

Please re-hide carefully.
