*** It is very possible that this box is now missing.***

Although the Spanish explorers used the port in the 1600's, and pirates probably stashed their booty there, Mazatlan went largely unnoticed until the German immigrantsarrived in the 1800's to develop the port for shipping Asian and European goods. The city was incorporated in 1806 and established a local government in 1837. Mazatlan got richer awhile later when miners discovered silver and gold in the hills outside of town. But when the mines where depleted, the city returned to its former, secluded state.
The 1960's saw Mazatlan's revival when its trophy fish and beaches began to lure vacationers. The first hotels were built along Playa Olas Altas, just blocks from the historic Zocalo. Since then, resort development has stretched north along the coast.
Mazatlan, meaning "land of the deer" in ancient Nahuatl language, offers 10 miles of inviting sandy beaches. It's no wonder Mazatlan plays host to more than 1 million visitors per year.
Mazatlan spreads for 15 sunsplashed mailes along a thumb of land that extends southward into the Pacific just below the Tropic of Cancer. Mazatlan thus marks the beginning of the Mexican tropics: a palmy land of perpetual summer and a refuge from winter cold for growing numbers of international vacationers. Mazatlan's beauty is renowned.
It's coast sprinkled with beckoning islands and miles of golden beaches and blue lagoons, it aptly deserves it's title as "Pearl of the Pacific"

This microbox was is the second from my wonderful cruise aboard the Diamond Princess. Please also see that there is another letterbox in Mazatlan as well.

1. Find the shopping center just off port from the ships dock.
2. From the "ID Checkpoint" walk through the indoor facility to the exit at 260*. This should bring you to a orange and blue tiled area with outdoor shopping.
3. Looking behind you, you should see a light blue shop with bright pink trim. From the door that you just walked through (looking back at it with a sign above it stating "Gate to Ship"), you will see some small Flamboyant bushes with orange flowers to the left. Under a small piece of concrete and rock you will find the Sun of Mazatlan. If you get to the taxis you have gone too far.

This is a VERY busy location and I originally wanted to plant this box on the way up to the other one in Mazatlan but I was watched too carefully to plant it. Therefore it sits were it may be found by others. If you should be heading to Mazatlan and plan to hit both boxes there, please email me.
