NOTE: reported missing June 2012.
Much of this area was underwater for most of the last century, dammed and used as the water source for the town of Santa Fe. Before Europeans settled here, it was home to the indigenous people of the region. Today, it is being restored in the hopes that native wildlife and plants will once again inhabit the canyon. For this reason, dogs and bicycles are not permitted here.
To the trailhead: From Paseo de Peralta head up Canyon Road. When it ends, go right and follow the signs for Upper Canyon Road. At the intersection of Upper Canyon and Cerro Gordo, go left. Just across the bridge on the right is the parking area for the Santa Fe Canyon Preserve. Find the Nature Conservancy loop trail. Be prepared for wet feet if it’s been raining. Plan to spend about an hour on the hunt.
To the letterbox: Trek the trail through a willow swale. Proceed past a pond and beyond benches. Watery distractions will lead you astray since this letterbox is high and dry. Eventually, you will meet an Indian couple, babe in arms, with the Earth’s bounty arrayed before them. Sixty steps beyond them you will find a rocky seam with a prickly neighbor. El Indio is inside, shaded by a root and hidden from view by loose rocks.
You can continue on this loop back to your car. Keep left when you meet the Dale Ball trails and then left again when you hit the pavement on Cerro Gordo.
