Moms the Word

All three boxes in place 10/10/07!!

Box 3 is Replaced!!5/5/06

This series is our first letterbox placed and was inspired by our mother an avid letterboxer and kayaker. She kayaks here often and completed one of her first letterboxes here. This series was placed on mother’s day 2005 as a surprise to our marvelous matriarch. This hike takes you on a great hike along the horse trails at Goddard Park. It is fairly easy terrain with a nice wide path and breathtaking scenery with the bay to one side of you through most of the hike. We hope others will enjoy this spot as we have for many years.

Directions: Take Rt 1 into East Greenwich turn onto Old Forge Rd. turns into Ives Rd. Follow Ives until you come to the main park entrance about 2 miles from the turn. Enter the park and follow the road bearing left at the gate. Pass the first bathhouse on the right and look for the second bathhouse on the left. Park here in this small lot.

Clues: BOX 1 Start by crossing the street heading towards the woods. Pass firepit #50 and look WEST towards the opening of a low wooden fence. Enter here and turn left you will quickly come to an intersection where you will head northbound. Enjoy the pretty water view on the left and wave to the boaters. At the intersection head 320 degrees Northwest. Soon descend upon a short steep hill, then up and bend left. When you see the three trunked white birch you are almost to your treasure. Approach the T intersection look South 160 degrees for the 5' stump. Inside the stump lies the "paddle".

BOX 2 Back to main trail and follow with the water on your left (heading North). At the T take the path at 30 degrees. Just before the clearing with picnic tables, take a left down a short path to the beach. Head East and walk yourself across the beach. At the end of the boardwalk head South up wooden steps and south again up stone steps. Atop the hill look for the bumpy Y tree. From the southeast side of the tree look 139 degrees to a tall pine standing alone. Head 22 paces towards the lonely pine. Here lies the "lifevest".

BOX 3 Head back to the trail Northeast along the water. Follow to the 3 way intersection next to the pond. Head east over a landbridge. On the other side at the next 3 way intersection, head Northeast 50 degrees. At the T intersection head 30 degrees. At the Y intersection head north. At the next Y head 40 degrees toward the water. Once you reach the end of the trail (beach) look to your left back a little into the woods, look for an odd looking stump. Here lies the "Kayak".

Congratulations!!! You have completed "Mom's the Word" letterbox series, either head back the way you came or walk along the water depending upon the tide. Once you reach beach area you will find the trail you entered in past the pavillion. Follow the same trail back again. Look for the low wooden fence for your exit.
