When the Lewis & Clark expedition arrived at this point, Sacajawea had been seriously ill for several days.Lewis had a cask of water brought from this site and administered it to Sacajawea. He wrote of the water..."The virtues of this water which I resolved to try on the Indian woman."June 16,1805...It may have saved her life,as she soon recovered.
To find this place you may need to contact the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. At the trailhead it is a moderate hike of 1.8 miles...(one way)Be sure to arrive at the rock staircase or you will be lost.
STAND ON THE BOTTOM STEP
WHERE YOU'LL SEE A POND
LOOK TO THE RIGHT
YOU'LL SEE ANOTHER ONE
THAT IS JUST BEYOND
TAKE A COMPASS READING
OF 60 DEGREE
AN EARTHEN DAM
AND BUSHES YOU'LL SEE
FOLLOW THE WATER
FOR PACES OF 135
LOOK FOR A FLAT
JUNIPER BUSH
AND YOUR STILL ALIVE
POKE THE BUSHES
WITH A STICK OR RAKE
KEEP EYES AND EARS OPEN
FOR LIZARD OR SNAKE
LOOK FOR THREE ROCKS
SOME FLAT AND SOME ROUND
LO' AND BEHOLD
