April 13, 2006 - Box has been replaced with new clues!

General Info

Find the WPA. A map of the place may be helpful. This is a beautiful park, with April and May being the most spectacular months to visit. But there is a lot to see any season of the year. The trails can be a bit muddy after heavy rains. A compass will be very helpful - all readings are magnetic.

Clue

Athena, the goddess of wisdom, gave several gifts to the Greek people. One of these gifts was a specific kind of tree, the fruits of which are still enjoyed in modern Greece and around the world. If you go to Seattle's premier tree collection, you can find this Family of trees well represented.

Once you have found the area where this Family grows, search for Fraxinus angustifolia, the "Dr. Pirone" variety. This is your starting point.

Face 35*, and walk about 64 steps - you should have met up with Halfdan at this point. Remember or record the number of hybrids!

Continue on the trail that starts at 10*. You will pass Caerhays Belle (R), King George (L), and Pilgrim (R). Turn left at the path at the giant cedar. If you hit pavement, you went too far.

At the fork, stay right. When stairs appear, take them down. Continue at 290* past Acer Palmatum (R) until you have refound your Way. Stand on the metal Outfall, and face 340*.

Walk for approximately (# of hybrids) steps. After your little walk, you should see a narrow break in the bushes and a small path on your left. Follow this small path straight until you come out onto a slightly larger, gravel path. Turn right.

When you come to the 4-way, take the path that runs just west of magnetic north, and then keep left. When given the choice, take the high road at 250*. When you have a choice again, follow the gravel path at 190*. Stay on the main trail for a ways. When you go up a gentle rise and see a wooden fence on your right, watch for a large, straight cedar close to the path on the left. Athena is resting at the base around back, under a rock and some small cedar twigs.

Please be discreet, and rehide very well after your rendezvous - this is a busy place. After your quest, you might want to do a bit of bird watching - I understand there is a resident owl nearby. Drop me a note if you wish to tell me about your search.
