These boxes are part of a six box series
We last checked them on 7/30/06

The C&D Canal connects the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River. It provides a shortcut of about 300 miles for ship traffic between the Port of Baltimore, and the northeastern U.S. cities and Europe.

The C & D Canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering landmark. The C & D Canal is also the site of 6 large bridges that were built for the specific purpose of crossing the canal with 5 highway crossings and 1 railroad crossing. The C & D Canal also has hiking and bicycle trails (dirt & gravel, not paved) along the shoreline of most of the canal's length.

The project office in historic Chesapeake City, Md., is also the site of the C&D Canal Museum and Bethel Bridge Lighthouse.

For more information about the canal and the train bridge check out the website:

Clues to CHESAPEAKE CITY BRIDGE BOX:

You can hike or bike (road is dirt & gravel), or drive (may want to have 4WD if it has rained recently).

At the T where Lock Street meets the canal (on the north side of Chesapeake City), turn left and head east along the canal on the gravel road.

Soon you will see a lighthouse on your right on the other side of the canal. Continue past the fishing pier. When you see a road that bears to the left stay on the canal road…you’re almost there! Soon you will see a cemetery across the canal. Stop at the telephone pole #685 - you have to look up the pole…and not all poles have numbers:( Look under the big rock behind the pole for the box.
Continue on to find the Summit Bridge Box.

Clues to SUMMIT BRIDGE BOX:

Continue East, at the next fork in the road take the left road (right is a dead end). At the top of the road take the road that leads back down to the canal. When you get to pole #570 you will see a yellow pipe on the left. The box is behind the tree that is behind the pipe.

You are currently about 1 mile from Lock St.
Backtrack to return to Chesapeake City.
There are many nice restaurants on either side of the canal. There is also a great ice cream place in South Chesapeake City.

Don’t forget to get the four boxes in St Georges, Delaware.
