Status: Probably lost in the wildfires. Unknown as of 5/11/07. I will post an update as soon as I have a chance to check on them.

Note: This is a moderate hike that may take 3-4 hours to complete, or longer if you go to the top of Mt. Hollywood. Bring lots of water, wear sunscreen, and try to avoid high noon during the summer!

I was noticing one day that all of my letterboxes have to do with death, animals, or Hollywood, and frequently combine two themes at once, like my series commemorating the death scenes of celebrities, my letterbox in honor of my dead cat, or my series devoted to putting back together one of my favorite Star Trek characters who was blown to smithereens in the last movie.

So, in keeping with this, I have made a series dedicated to a few of my favorite television shows that are no longer in production. There are a few shows left out, for which I feel wracked with guilt, but Jessica Fletcher, Dorothy Zbornak, Special Agent Dale Cooper, and all the boys from Whose Line Is It Anyway will just have to wait…

Start out from the Old Zoo Picnic Area parking lot in Griffith Park, and head west past the gate, following the large paved path to the chain-link fence with the large hole. (From the picnic area itself, follow the small paved path to the northwest corner, and then to the same chain-link fence with the hole.) Pass through the hole and follow the dirt path to the right. At the next fork, follow the trail uphill to the left.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Continue uphill until you reach the first good view of Glendale. If you see a yellow pipe that says 31-6 on it, you are in the right place. Take the small trail to the right of the pipe down. Look for a pipe with graffiti on your left. About 15 steps past this pipe, turn right into the small clearing and head toward the short cliff with the large bush on top and the snaky roots. At the base of this cliff, on the right, under some rocks is the Star Trek: The Next Generation letterbox. Return to the main trail.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 ***replaced 11/20/06***
Follow the trail, but don’t be fooled by the forks that lead to water towers. Continue up the hill until the trail is split in two with another yellow pipe in the middle. Back to your left is another small trail; follow this. When you reach the high point, just before the trail heads downhill, look left to see a rusty pipe. The right section of pipe has a small trail beyond it and a bush to the right of it. Take the trail to the back side of the bush. At the base of the bush is a pile of rocks and twigs, underneath is the Mystery Science Theater 3000 letterbox. Return to the main trail and continue up the hill.

The Muppet Show
As you come within 50-100 feet of water tower 113, there is a small trail along the ridge on the right. Follow this in the direction of the water tower until you see a large pipe with the graffiti “DOH”. Look behind the graffiti to the left, behind the pipe and under some rocks for the Muppet Show letterbox. Return to the main trail and continue uphill.

At marker 14, go right on the fire road.

Soon, on the left, you will see marker 16. Follow this if you want to go to the top of Mt. Hollywood. It will add about an hour round trip to the journey, and some serious elevation gain, but has a terrific view. I have not planted any letterboxes up there, though the Mt. Hollywood letterbox is there. The directions are: From marker 16, head up the trail to marker 39 and turn left. At marker 33, continue straight-ish, making sure you are still heading uphill. You’ll know you’re there when you reach some picnic tables with wooden fencing around them. Then just return the way you came to marker 16.

Animaniacs ***missing? 11/20/06***
Continue past marker 16 on the fire road. Soon, a trail will join from the left. (I can’t remember if the marker is there or not, but it’s supposed to be marker 18.) Just beyond this trail on the left is a no parking sign. Facing it, to the right is a tree. Step up next to the tree. (You may want to make some crunchy sounds in the ground cover – when I stepped up here about a dozen tiny lizards scattered every which way!) Behind the tree in the rock wall, near the ground is a hole. Behind the rocks in the hole is the Animaniacs letterbox. (Poke a stick thoroughly in here!)

Cross the fire road and follow the trail just to the right of the power line structure. At water tower 112, bear to the right trail – avoid the dirt pit on the left. Continue downhill and at the fork, stay right and head towards that white water tower. At marker 22, turn right.

The Young Ones ***missing? 11/20/06***
At marker 22, walk toward the gap between the white water tower and the cement block building. At the far corner of the cement wall, under the large rock at the base of the bush is the Young Ones letterbox. Return to the trail and head downhill.

Soon you will reach Amir’s Garden, which is pretty cool and fun to get lost in. After checking it out and taking a breather, continue down the hill.

The Carol Burnett Show
At water tower 73, face the small shack to the right of the water tower. On the right side of the shack, check behind the area where the large pipe comes through the wall. Look under the large rock behind the crumbled green cement block for the Carol Burnett Show letterbox. Continue down the hill.

When you reach the bottom of the steep hill and can see Griffith Park Drive, the trail will go every which way. Go right and take the trail that parallels the road.

The Kids in the Hall
Continue along the trail until there is a small clearing on the right with a couple of many-trunked trees. Go to the tree that is growing flat and face it from the right side. Check under the tree just to the left of the large branch split for the Kids in the Hall letterbox. Return to the trail.

The Honeymooners
Follow the trail for a while, keeping an eye out for the section of trail that matches this description: the trail is veering to the left, there is a V-shaped tree on the right side of the trail, there is a white water tower above and to the right, and there is a small trail on the left side of the trail that leads down to a picnic area below.

Follow the small trail down, but before reaching the clearing, follow the small trail up to the left to a many-trunked tree. Under a rock in the middle of the trunks is the Honeymooners letterbox. Return to the trail.

Stay with this trail, and after a few minutes you should be able to see the Old Zoo picnic area on your left. When you reach the fork that gives you the option to head back uphill to the right or downhill to the left (there is a wooden post with a sign with nothing on it here), take the left and soon you will be at the chain-link fence with the hole in it!
