THE LEGEND OF THE DOGWOOD TREE
(Dogwood Canyon)
When Christ was on earth, the dogwood grew
To a towering size with a lovely hue.
Its branches were strong and interwoven
And for Christ's cross its timbers were chosen.
Being distressed at the use of the wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
"Not ever again shall the dogwood grow
To be large enough for a tree, and so
Slender and twisted it shall always be
With cross-shaped blossoms for all to see.
The petals shall have bloodstains marked brown
And in the blossom's center a thorny crown.
All who see it will think of me,
Nailed to a cross from a dogwood tree.
Protected and cherished this tree shall be
A reflection to all of my agony.

This letterbox is located in Dogwood Canyon Nature Park. Please visit this link to learn more about this park. http://www.bigcedar.com/dogwood_canyon/ We have visited this park twice and absolutely are in love with it. I urge you to go into the park and take the tram or the bicycle tour. You will not be disappointed. The beauty of this place cannot possibly be put into words. We took our 3 and 1 year old on the bicycle tour and it is very easy going.
From Branson take 76W to Branson West. From Branson West take 13S. You will go through the towns of Kimberling City and Lampe. After Lampe watch for 86W which veers off to the right. You will see 1 or 2 signs for Dogwood Canyon on the drive there. Dogwood Canyon will be on the left side of the road.
When you reach the park you will see a mailbox for Dogwood Canyon. Stand with your back to the mailbox. Walk straight up the hill behind the mailbox for aapproximately 28 paces. You will see a cedar tree with a smaller tree to the left of it. Look on the back side of the smaller tree and the letterbox is under some brush and rocks. Please rehide well.
