Visiting Mountain God

This mini-box has no ink or pen, please bring your own.
As with most hikes in Hawaii, bring water and wear sunscreen. Sturdy shoes are recommended.

This Ancient Mountain God traveled from Cadillac Mountain, Maine to see the mountains of Hawaii. He visited Diamond Head and Haleakela, and although they were quite beautiful, he found them much too crowded for his liking, so he made his way down to Hana town for some peace and quiet. On his way back up route 360 at Mile Marker #32 he noticed a sign for Waianapanapa State Park and decided to visit. He was quite taken with the turquoise waves crashing on black sand beaches and lava cliffs.
He saw a sign for an Ancient Burial Ground and decided to pay his respects, following the trail in a generally northerly direction across the black sand beach and up along the lava cliffs. He found this trail much like the Hana road – many twists and turns, dips and rises and beauty all around. The black lava rocks dotted with bright jade-colored plants on the one side were as pleasing to him as the waves crashing against the cliffs on the other side.
Eventually he came to what must be the burial ground. Here, on the right side of the trail was a raised rectangular plot with one smooth gray rock, much like a headstone. Up ahead on the left he noticed some lava rocks built like walls. He continued a short distance past the grave and faced the ocean. He looked out upon the most beautiful little cove with tall rock islands and waves crashing all around. He knew that here he had found a home away from home.

You can find the Visiting Mountain God by following the trail to this grave. Continue 25 steps past the grave and turn to face the ocean. There will be two paths going between lava rocks. Take the right hand path and go in 12 steps. Look knee/thigh high on your right behind some small smooth-faced stones and a piece of coconut shell for the Visiting Mountain God’s Hana-home.
Please try to re-hide with the smooth sides of the stones facing out.

Notes: *The return trek to the parking area took about 20 minutes, as we were not stopping every hundred feet to take pictures ;-). Allow yourselves at least an hour for the round trip. **The orange windsock at the Hana airport is visible from the box. ***Hand-carved stamp. ****This box is somewhat of an orphan, as we will most likely not be back any time soon.
