(7/2008: Sorry we're no longer to check or maintain our boxes. Check the latest status on LBNA prior to hunting it.)

This is a two-part letterbox commemorating the heroic rescue of Lawrence doctor John Doy. The two boxes, one in Lawrence and one outside of St. Joseph, Missouri, are both needed to complete the stamped image.

The year is 1859 and you have been selected to participate in a daring rescue of an innocent man.

Dr. John Doy, a founding father of Lawrence, was captured by slave hunters from Missouri while attempting to lead a group of thirteen former slaves north to Iowa on the Underground Railroad. After being captured 12 miles north of Lawrence, Doy and his 21-year-old son were jailed in Weston and Platte City, Mo., for the crime of abducting slaves.

They were held in Platte City until March 20, 1859 when they were taken to St. Joseph, Mo., for trial. After this trial, Doy’s son was released, but no verdict was reached for Dr. Doy. He was tried again, and at the second trial he was convicted on the bogus charge and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary.

Doy documented his treatment in Missouri jails in the book he later wrote, telling how he and his son were displayed in the streets, beaten and nearly hung.

Fortunately for Doy, a rescue party of ten men was organized. They assembled at Lawrence and took different routes in order to avoid attention.

Your journey begins at St. Joseph. From there, take Highway 36 west to Highway 59 south. Travel south on 59 for 8.7 miles until you see the sign for Bluffwoods Conservation Area. Go 1.2 miles past the sign and turn left on Henman Road. Drive .9 mile to 60th Road. Turn left into the parking lot.

From the parking lot, cross the open field and picnic area until you reach the bridge. Don’t cross this bridge – instead head straight along the trail marked with a red “A”.

Head down this path to release Dr. Doy. Keep an eye out for Bushwackers, Border Ruffians, and other unsavory types.

A short ways on your journey, you will pass through a little valley in which you will cross over the creek twice within a short distance.

You will cross the creek again. The opposite bank is quite steep, so don’t slip.

You’ll cross a bridge, go left on the other side.

You’ll cross another bridge, go left again on the other side.

When you reach a bridge that has a small waterfall on the right, you are very near the location of the doctor’s incarceration. Stand in the middle of this bridge, facing the waterfall.

Over your left shoulder, a gnarled old sentry points the way you need to go. If you follow his direction straight across the forest floor, you would be 25 steps from Dr. Doy’s rocky prison. An indirect route might be more advisable, though, in order to draw less attention from the authorities.

With a combination of boldness and luck, the rescue party broke Doy out of that St. Joseph jail and returned him to Lawrence without a shot being fired.
