Sandy Bottom Nature Park, Hampton, VA
This is the first of many boxes we hope to plant in this park. The walk is an easy one, although some areas tend to get pretty muddy. Please do not stray off the path; when you get to the box you can retrieve it without going more than a few steps off-trail.
You will likely need bug repellent in season!
***This area is home to the endangered Canebrake Rattlesnake. While they are obviously rare, they are indigenous to the area and it's not unheard of to spot them on the trail. If you choose to hunt this letterbox, you must agree NOT to harm the snakes (it's illegal anyway) but to report them to the rangers, who track their activity. Remember too that rattlesnakes and letterboxes enjoy similar hideouts, so be sure to test any letterbox sites with a long stick!***

When you arrive at Sandy Bottom Nature Park park in the first parking lot, nearest the first shelter. Take the Wood Duck trail located across the road from the parking lot. Be sure you're starting at the beginning (you should see a #1 marker shortly). Follow the trail around, enjoying the scenery, until you come to marker #17. Some way past this marker you'll see an old fence on your right, and shortly thereafter the trail makes a sharp bend to the left. If you turn around 180 degrees at the elbow (an instruction, not a bearing), you'll see the tree on your right that hides the treasure. If you find marker #18, you're about 90 paces too far!

This is another of EEK's boxes. She's only four and still developing her carving skills, so this is a simplistic little stamp but she's very proud of it. We hope you enjoy the hunt and come back to enjoy the park and the nature center as well. Team Raucous Auk
