Penfield Parks #2
Veteran’s Memorial Park
Total estimated time: 15-20 minutes.
Trail difficulty: Easy to moderate
Clue difficulty: Easy

This is the second in a series of letterboxes placed in parks in the suburban Rochester, NY town of Penfield. The boxes can be hunted in any order, but the clues are designed to lead you along the quickest route from one to the next, so you can easily do all four in one afternoon.

Veteran’s Memorial Park is packed with soccer players and little leaguers in the summer, and cross-country skiers in the winter. But you’re more interested in the park’s pleasant nature trails.

As you leave Thousand Acre Swamp, turn south on Jackson Rd. Don't go too fast, because just down the road, on the east side, is Veteran’s Memorial Park. Enter the park, drive past the soccer fields on your left, and turn left at the basketball courts. Continue until you see a large picnic pavilion ahead. Park at the far end of the lot, nearest the pavilion, in front of the flag.

Find the trailhead at the *north* end of the pavilion. The trail leads left into the woods, then, after trail marker 34, it forks to the right, deeper into the woods and down a hill. Where the path splits again, head to the left; you’ll pass signposts 35 and 28. When you reach the bridge, look over at the very large and wonderfully gnarly tree. The letterbox is tucked in the big root at the back of the tree, on the left side.

*Note*: As we were placing this box, we discovered a geocache in the large hole in the middle of the tree. If it's still there, sign their logbook too. They'd love to hear from you!

Take a left off of the bridge, and the path will lead you back to the park.

Bring your own pen and stamp pad.
