This is the third in a series of letterboxes placed in parks in the suburban Rochester, NY town of Penfield. The boxes can be hunted in any order, but the clues are designed to lead you along the quickest route from one to the next, so you can easily do all four in one afternoon.

Harris Whalen Park is also a popular winter destination, boasting nice cross-country ski trails and a sledding hill. A Penfield water tower dominates the view at the north end of the park.

After finding the Veteran’s Memorial Park letterbox, retrace your route back to Jackson Rd. and turn south. At Atlantic Ave. (Rt. 286), turn east for a little more than a mile, then south on Fairport Nine Mile Pt. Rd. (Rt. 250). At Penfield Rd. (Rt. 441) head west, and watch for Harris Whalen Park Rd. on your right.

Follow the entrance road to the parking lot at the top of the hill, near the water tower. Park at the northeast corner of the lot, near the pine trees. Go through the pines to the bocce courts and you’ll see the trailhead.

Head down the wide path, and take your first left. Where the trail forks, head right and up a hill. At the crest of the hill, continue straight ahead, back down the hill. Before you reach the houses at the end of the trail, look for a rusted sign on the left. Stand on the flat rock behind the sign, and face the fallen down tree. About at the middle of that tree you’ll find what you seek.

To get back to the parking lot, head back up the hill and turn right. This trail will lead you out, near the water tower.

Bring your own pen and stamp pad.
