This hike is about 2- 2 1/2 miles long.

DIRECTIONS: From I-384, take exit 3. Turn onto route 83 south and head towards Glastonbury. You will pass Lutz Children's Museum on the left. From there, drive 1.1 mile to a 4-way intersection near the town line. Shallow Brook Rd. is on the right BUT you should turn left onto Line Rd. Once on Line Rd. drive .7 miles to a parking area on the left. You may encounter some mountain bikers during your hike today.

NOTE: This adventure begins at the same spot as the "Casey Kasem Counts 'Em Down" and "Dick Clark's American Bandstand" letterbox series.

The "Punchline" series refers to riddles that I learned as a kid. When I was about 3 or 4, I told them whenever my family went to visit friends and relatives. My poor aunts and uncles heard me tell the same riddles over and over again, but they laughed anyway. When you're a young kid, your audience is always easy to amuse! Anyway, here's my ode to simple family memories.

Once you park your car, pick up a map at the information stand if you can. Walk to the northeast corner of the parking lot. You will be starting on a yellow blazed trail there. Follow it as it winds its way downhill and across a bridge. Soon you will cross a paved road (It's Line St.) and climb gradually. You will walk across a "groovy" bridge. When you come to a dirt road, turn right. Continue to follow yellow blazes. You will soon reach a gravelly patch on the trail. Watch for an unmarked trail on the left. Turn here and take 22 steps. At 30 degrees follow the trail past a couple of stones on the left. Take about 60 steps along the trail. Notice a group of rocks uphill to the left. Walk to it (about 18 steps). From this spot, go about 10 steps to the right to another rocky spot to find the answer to this riddle:

How do you keep a skunk from smelling?

Once you have stamped in, return to the unmarked trail and head back to yellow. Back at the intersection of the gravelly yellow trail, turn left and continue. Soon the gravel ends. Walk uphill past a creatively cut stump on the right. Walk over a culvert. Eventually you will come to a fork. Turn right and IMMEDIATELY right again. Notice a hole/foundation (?) on the right. STOP here. With your back to the hole, look for an impressive 5-sister tree at 180 degrees. It is about 40 yards away. Go there and look on the south side for the answer to this riddle:

Why did the chicken cross the road?

After rehiding the box, return to the trail junction. Follow yellow trail at 280 degrees (west) for about 10 minutes. You will once again cross the road and end up at the parking lot.

Once there, go to the chained gate on the northwest corner. You will now be following the unmarked mulch-covered trail. Enjoy the scenery (and peace and quiet) as you walk for 10-15 minutes. I often see deer along here. Anyway, stay on this trail as it winds around. Eventually you will come to a strait betwen two larger wet areas. This is Redgate Pond. Stop and relax here. It's quite nice. Anyway...turn around and take about 32 steps to a slightly crooked tree on the right. Then follow the trail a short ways uphill to another crooked tree on the right. (It's about 10 ft off the trail.) Look at 90 degrees for a 4-sister tree. Scamper 30 steps to it. Look inside for the answer to this riddle:

If an athlete gets athlete's foot, what do astronauts get?

Follow the trail back to your car. I hope you had fun! Let me know what you think.

Peace and happy trails to all!
