REPORTED MISSING AUGUST 2004

Nearest town: Gloucester, Massachusetts

Accessibility: The station is closed to the public, but there is a parking lot nearby and the breakwater next to the lighthouse is open all year, with good views of the lighthouse. There are "private road" signs posted in the Eastern Point neighborhood, but visitors are permitted to drive to the lighthouse.

For a History and photographs of the lighthouse please visit http://www.lighthouse.cc/easternpoint/index.html

Difficulty: Easy, this is a driveby letterbox with a little beach combing.

Box placed on 28 October 2001 by the Lonemasswolf and his companion You Inspire My Spirit. All questions and comments should be directed to lonemasswolf@earthlink.net

Driving Directions: Take Route 128 north to it’s very end. Cross over Route 127A on to East Main Street. Follow East Main Street, past the entrance to Rocky Neck. Bear right on to Eastern Point Blvd W at the y intersection with Farrington. Continue on Eastern Point Blvd W past Niles Beach on the right, to the point at which Eastern Point Blvd W becomes a one way street leading off to the right. Follow the road through the Residents Only “gate” to the lighthouse at the end of the road.

CLUES TO THE LETTERBOX
From the small parking lot by the lighthouse, walk back up the road to the private driveway on the right. Proceed down the driveway for thirty paces to a small path on the left. Follow this faint path along the edge of the salt marsh [may get boggy at times] to a small circle of stones amidst a rock strewn sandy area. Look to the west to see the figure of a reclining woman, known as Mother Ann, in the rocks near the lighthouse. This is Cape Ann’s answer to New Hampshire’s Old Man in the Mountains.

Continue along a southerly direction toward the beach. Once you have reached the rocky shore, head in an easterly direction over the rocks to a small somewhat clear sandy area. [BEWARE, this area is likely to be covered in poison ivy during the summer]. From this sandy area you will see a rocky promontory just about due south from your position. Make your way out over the rocks to the eastern most tip of this promontory.

From this position, the white chimney on the tan trapezoidal house is on a bearing of 40O, the lighthouse is on a bearing of 295O, and Boston is on a bearing of 250O. 5O past north from this point, at the edge of the rocky beach, you will see three distinct rocks. The Eastern Point Lighthouse Letterbox is hidden among these stones.

THIS BOX WAS REPORTED MISSING ON 18 JUNE 2003. tHIS HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED.
