The Stars and Stripes letter box was placed by a local Junior Girl Scout troop. It is located in Panthorn Park, home of Southington's National Trails Day Festival held each June. Instructions on the trail were made up by the girls.
Be sure to also visit "Take a Gander" and "Star Gazing" (placed by our sister troop).
On 5/25 - 5/26/06 I replace everything but the stamp and dried out the log book! Next time hikers, please leave the profanity out of the log book!
Driving directions: ~From I-84 West through Southington, take Meriden-Waterbury Rd. exit 28 (route 322). At the end of the ramp turn right. Go to the next light and turn left onto Ruggles Row. ~ From I-84 East take the Meriden-Waterbury Rd. exit 28 (Route 322). At the light, go straight across to Ruggles Row. Go to the Stop sign, turn left onto Burritt Street. Go over the I-84 overpass, continue downhill about ¼ mile and the entrance to Panthorn Park is on the right.
Drive in past the Maintenance buildings. When you get to the colorful Children’s Playscape turn left into the gravel parking lot. From there, walk across the wooden bridge and toward the south side of the pond. Walk past the 2 benches and a picnic table. The trail entrance is on your right near the pile of gravel.
Cross over the recycled boardwalk and turn right at the picnic table. Follow the trail past the junkyard. You will pass 2 large fallen trees and a large pine tree with a spike that looks like a spicket. Follow the path down the hill and over the wooden bridge and gravel path. You will come across a large stump and a long wooden bridge. You will see the power lines on your left. When you reach yellow pole number 15, turn around and take 6 steps back. On your left, you will see what looks like a path but is not a path, a path to nowhere.
Follow the path to nowhere for 20 steps. There under the brush and sticks you will find the letterbox.
