Hike Length: 5 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

Entering Lakeside from the west (on Highway 260) the first stoplight you come to will be Porter Mountain Road. Turn left here and go 1.7 miles and then turn right, continuing on Porter Mountain Road for another .6 miles. Turn off the paved road, cross a cattle guard and drive through a small forest of alligator juniper to the Timber Mesa Trailhead.

Exit the parking lot left of the kiosk and take the low road to the old Jacques Ranch. This was originally called the Broken Arrow Ranch, a large cattle and sheep operation that started in the 1880s. The chimneys and a bit of the foundation are all that's left of the 2-story log headquarters building after a fire in 1953.

Now, fan out and search for the third chimney in this area, probably belonging to the house they actually lived in. (It's not easy to spot right away, but it is within sight of the ranch house.) From the third chimney, you’ll find the box at 50 degrees from north, under the SW side of an overturned stump. We added a few sticks to masquerade as roots in front of the box.

This tree was one of many box elders they planted along the irrigation ditch. Follow this side of the ditch back toward the big house to find their old cistern. Careful not to fall in!
