Stamp carved by Choi

In the late 18th century, clocks were a luxury. Back then, people simply lived their lives by the sun -- they rose when the sun rose and settled in when the sun set. Clockmakers were skilled craftsman and pioneering engineers. Putting together an instrument that would tell time accurately and consistently was not simple work back then.

In 1766, Benjamin Willard began making clocks in his shop in Grafton, Massachusetts. Within a few years, each of his three brothers, Simon, Ephraim, and Aaron, were in the business as well. Willard clocks were prominent in New England, and many still exist -- over 80 of them (all functional) at the original workshop in which they were made.

The Willard House and Clock Museum is located in Grafton, MA. For more information, see their website at www.willardhouse.org.

Once at the museum, the box is easy to find. Look for the stone wall that runs between the road and the parking lot on the north side. As the wall moves to the west, a ledge drops the wall about 2 feet. Right at that spot, about a foot or so down the wall, is the box, well hidden behind the wall's stones.

Please note that this box is on private property. Discretion is mandatory!

PLEASE re-hide the box well!
