Recently there has been discovered a strange fossil embedded in rock.....many opinions have surrounded this discovery. An early species of bird? A tyrodacatal? What can it be? Inside information has it that this fossil proves Dragons once roamed the earth. This information has been kept secret. However, a replica of the fossil has secretly been made and placed in the very area in which the original was found in the hopes this information will be made public! If there is proof that Dragons were once real....this could be it. Decide for yourself. Stamp----"Dragon In The Rock"--and help uncover this secret....

Smuggled Document #223.2
"Draco-Inviolatus: Evidence points to this branch of the family being ground dwellers, walking on all fours, and spending little time in the air. The 'inviolatus' specimens have been mainly found in the sub-terainian levels, in family groups with sizes ranging from 10cm long to almost 3 metres in length. As with all dragonkind the caves where they lived were found to be heavily laiden with gold."

DRAGON IN THE ROCK

Washington County, near Rockville, RI

Hidden 10/18/02 (checked out on 7/3/04...all is well)
Clues: Easy
Hike: no more than 2 miles round trip, moderate to strenuous, lots of rocky ravines which can get slippery. Take your time and all should be well.

Directions: Follow 138 in RI until you reach Wincheck Rd in Rockville. Take a left on Wincheck followed by another left onto Canonchet Rd. Drive .5 miles to North Rd. and follow it one mile to the parking area. A little before the parking area the road turns to dirt....There will be a sign at the parking area.

From the small parking area, head south and follow the yellow blazes. You will be following the yellow blazes the whole trip. The first 200 yards or so look like a garden during the early summer with all of the rhododendrons in bloom!! At the beginning, the blazes are a little hard to follow. Very shortly after leaving the parking area, you will have to climb down a ledge and head SE into a wild rhododendron forest. You should see a tree with a plaque with a yellow 1 upon it. Continue following the yellow blazes generally to the south. You will cross a wooden bridge, go up some wooden steps, climbing an expanse of rock in an open area. When you reach the sign on the tree (Long Pond, Ell Pond, Hemlock Forest, Parking Area), head west then quickly south down into a rocky ravine. Don't rush, take your time. Follow the flat logs over a small stream then follow the trail up to the left and then down another rocky ravine. Climb the next rocky rise to the top. A rocky ledge/wall should be to the north and a tree with a yellow blaze on the right of the trail. Go 28 paces north along the base of this rocky ledge/wall to a large dead pine tree. Continue a few more paces north of this pine and drop down to a little nook in the ledge. Turn around 180 degrees to face the pine and tucked under the ledge you just climbed down will be The Dragon in the Rock.
(11/15/03 Update).......We went to check up on the box after a couple of reports of the lid being chewed by some wildlife. Once in the area, we could not find the box!! After searching far and wide, we came across the box way at the bottom of the ledge. It was hidden well but not where we had placed it. We're not sure how it came to be there. We had received a few reports of not being able to find it so this maybe is why? Maybe an animal dragged it down there and someone found it and placed it where they thought it should be? Who Knows!! As of 11/15/03 the box is where we originally placed it. Please re-hide in the original spot so others may find it!! Thank you!

You can continue on the trail following the yellow blazes if you like for some more neat views. Simply retrace your steps following the yellow blazes when you have finished. Please feel free to email us with any thoughts/comments as we would be interested in any feedback you may have. Thanks!!
