Location – Goldsmith Woodlands on Foster's Pond
These boxes will be going away on July 29th, 2006. So, make sure to go get them before that!
Parking - 491 South Main St (Rt 28), Andover, MA.
Distance - about 2 miles altogether
Stamps - Handcarved, no stamp pad. These stamps are visiting from PA!
Map - http://www.avisandover.org/Goldsmith%20Woodlands.htm
Be sure to wear bug spray for this trip, I was being attacked by many mosquitos and flies. Also, there were deer tracks on the trail, so be careful about ticks.
Other species seen in this area include: Lady slippers (I counted about 100 of them), chipmunks, signs of beavers, bull frogs, and a red tailed hawk.
~~~~~~~~~
Box 1: Maple Leaf Hex:
Enter the trailhead and walk along the path until you come to the High Trail path. Go up this path and turn left at the T. There will be a small path on your left leading back down the hill.
Go down this path about 20 paces till you find two downed trees. The Maple Leaf Hex letterbox is located near the stump of the further tree.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Box 2: Love and Romance Hex:
Find Bessie's Point (make sure to spray yourself with the bug stuff (lots of water around here)).
There is a trail below Bessie's point that runs out to the Site of Fryes' Dam. Take this path and find the large stump with a downed tree pointing to the left of it. The box is under the downed tree, behind the smaller tree.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Box 3: Double Headed Eagle Hex
Go to Zack's House, he used to be a caretaker and handyman for the summer residents here. Do not jump into his house or move the stones in any way.
With the sign for the "New Trail" behind you, walk 21 paces with the house on your right and look to the right. The box is located under leaves and sticks between a triangle of three young trees.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Box 4: 8 Pointed Star Hex
Go to Birch Cove and take 70 paces from the sign announcing the area.
On the left, there will be an area where the trail looks like it cuts out to the left through the fence.
The letterbox is located in a hole, behind a downed birch tree. Look for the tree to the left of the fake trail, the hole is on the left end of the downed tree.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once you have gotten these four letterboxes, continue on to Point Judith to collect Choi's Snakehead letterbox.
