Driving Directions:

Find your way to Common Street in Walpole MA. Turn onto South St. from Common St. About 1/4 mile up the street on your left will be a parking area for the Walpole Town Forest. It is across the street right after teh black mailbox for #221, and is marked by bright orange signs that say "No Parking after 9 pm"

Clues:

Once you have parked go through the brown and red metal gate. There will be water to your left, and in front of you. You will come to a T intersection, go right. Stay straight until another T intersection, go left. Follow this trail until it ends in a large clearing. Locate the engraved stone naming this area "Duffy Point." While standing at this stone find the tree with a long hollow gash near it's base. From this tree look to the right to the tree stump with two fallen logs. In the V of the two logs, and under a rock and debris, you will find "The Drowned Cathedral" letterbox. The is the first in this series in reverence of artists I hold in high regard. This first stamp is based on a woodcut by the graphic artist M.C. Escher.

For the next stamp, retrace your steps to the original T intersection, and this time go over the bridge. After the bridge you will be faced with numerous paths, take the one on the far right. Some trees on this trail will be marked by blue blazes. Son on your right hand side, after I think the second or third blue blazed tree, there will be a small path leading off to look at the water to the right. At the head of this trail is a large downed log, with a hollow core. The "Dream" letterbox is hidden under a flap of bark on the back side of the log. The "Dream" letterbox is also based on a woodcut by M.C. Escher.

Continue on straight, and at the next Y intersection take a right. Soon there will be a large pile of logs on your left hand side, with a small trail to the side of it. Take this left and go past a pond and uphill. At the top of the hill at the T intersection go right. At the next Y intersection go left uphill, and immediately go downhill. At the bottom of the hill go left and follow until the end, where it intersects with a gravel road. Take a left onto the gravel road, and follow this road for awhile till you come to a brick building on your left. Take the path to the left of the building (the building is marked Wash Sta. 4), and go straight till you pass between a large cement block, and a large rock. Right after walking through the path between these objects look for a large log about 5 feet off trail to your left. The "Dancer" letterbox is hidden in a hollow spot in the log under a sheet of bark. The hollow is on the right end when facing the log from the path. This box is in homage to Degas.

Continue straight for awhile, you will pass a swampy boggy area on your right. A little while after the wet area, the trailwill bend to the left then the right. After that you see a large tangle of dead tree on you right, around where a stone wall starts to appear. At the far end of the dead tree, there will be three large stone that meet, in the center under a smaller rock, you will find the "Rheumatism, Lumbago, Sciatica" letterbox. This box is also in homage to an artist, can you tell me who?

Continue straight, at the next Y go left (Going right would bring you to the bleachers at Walpole High). Continue follow this trail away from school, and to the left. (Note the engraved rock here that says "Memomorial Tree Planted by Calvin Coolidge May 1916.") At the next Y intersection go right, it will end at a T intersection, go right again. Follow this trail until the end and go right. Go to the where the stone part of the bridge begins, and go to the water's edge. Notice how there is a large hollow cavern in the stone wall. "The Scream" letterbox is in this cavern, under about four rocks. This box is in homage to the expressionist artist Edvard Munch. From here go over the bridge and you will know what to do.

A few things: please make sure to use discretion when getting these boxes. Please bring your own pens and inkpads, there aren't any in the boxes. Happy hunting!
