Location: The Winthrop Hill Letterbox, is in the Middlesex Fells Reservation. Take Rt. 93 to Exit 33 and take the rotary to Route 28 North. After crossing under the highway take a left at the SHEEPFOLD sign. There are two parking lots, a smaller one on the right and a larger one if you continue straight ahead. At the back of the larger parking lot is a bulletin board that reads SHEEPFOLD. The hike and clues start from this board.

Distance: About a 35 minute walk round trip not including clue solving and stamping.

Stamp: Hand-Carved

Terrain: Mostly easy flat terrain, with a few rocky inclines.

Other info: The Sheepfold is very popular dog playground, if your dog plays well with others I suggest you bring him/her along. The view on the top of Winthrop Hill is best during the early spring or late fall.

To the Letterbox:
Your quest begins through the Sheepfold where the dogs always play,
The dirt path at your feet sends you the correct way.
As you walk keep watch on the right for a lone-standing dead tree,
Head over the field and cross where the soapbox derby races used to be.
As you stand with the old tree find the blaze with which it is marked,
Go down the hill till you find the same blaze on another tree’s bark.
You must now leave the field and head in the woods,
At the 5-way intersection, listen to our directions you should.
First turn to the left and figure out how many soapbox derby cars used to race,
You will need this number to figure out which way to take your next pace.
Stand back on the trail you came in on and number it zero,
Count the trails counter-clockwise and take the trail whose number you know.
Walk along this trail, traveling up the hill and past a Grecian bath,
Stop at a four-way intersection just after you merge with another path.
To find your way at this intersection avoid the mountain bike trails and the way you came,
Walk along passing rocky cliffs until you are at an intersection again.
Here, look around until you find the “Red Man”,
This man points one way, and came from another, retrace his steps if you can.
Very shortly you must make another decision, you musn’t loose your will,
Take the path following the roots, between the rocks and head up the hill.
You are almost there, follow this trail until you come to a remarkable view,
The summit of Mount Winthrop we are glad to share with you.
Stand on the rocky outcropping where you can see the reservoir and an enviable home,
You are very near to your quest, not much farther must you roam.
Turn your back on the mansion and a new path will appear,
Follow this path to the double-arrowed rock, the treasure you seek is near.
Stand on the top of this rock, the mansion still behind you,
Two paths head into the field, you must take a third path which is hard to see and taken by few.
Follow this overgrown trail until you find a spot where a mountainside BBQ would be just fine,
The Winthrop Hill Letterbox awaits behind the lonely pine.

After Stamping In Please Re-Hide Well.

TO GET BACK:
Stand at the pine facing the lake. There is a small path opposite the pine which leads back to the view of the lake and the mansion. From there you can follow the blazes back to the Sheepfold and your car.

Be sure to check out the other boxes in the Middlesex Fells like "The Two Towers Series" and "The Frightful Fells".
