FRIENDS ARE UPLIFTING
Happy Birthday to The Lady and the Whippet .
June 1 2007 box check , all boxes in good condition , but the mentioned bench is no longer there along the path by the water . It may have been taken in for the winter and not returned, all other clues are fine .
Please bring your colored pens as the Friends box needs, blue, light brown, black , purple, orange, red and green .
The Lady and the Whippet and Sky, the Whippet ,are two of my good friends. They both have a wonderful cheerful energy that is always uplifting. Three boxes were planted as a birthday surprise close to their home. I hope you will enjoy this woods walk close to the beach.
In Niantic, travel on Route 156 and west of town turn onto Fairhaven Road . Then, turn right on the second street, Brainard Road. Two stone pillars are at the entrance of the road and it ends at a private driveway. Park in the new parking area on the right side of the road. There are picnic tables there if you want to sit for a snack.
Pass through the parking lot onto the main path going slightly down hill . Cross over to the west side of the bridge and go up the small unmarked path . It will meet with a wider well worn trail. Turn right and walk north on this trail up a little rise. Very soon the trail levels off and look on the right and three large rocks. Almost on the trail is a young tree kissing the largest boulder very close to the ground. Look south to one of the other rocks and you will find Sky, my Whippet friend. This is the Friends Are Uplifting letterbox. Stamp in with your colored pens and please re hide well.
Now go off to find The Lady and the Whippets two grandsons treasures. Tanner’s Beach Ball and Colin’s Sand Bucket .
Return to the trail and retrace back down to the Main Trail and turn right. This is blazed with a white diamond. A tidal creek is on your left. At a junction with the red diamond and a huge multi armed tree, turn left in an Easterly direction onto the Red Diamond trail. The tidal Creek comes into view as you bend south, to your right. A bench [ missing June 1, 2007] awaits for those who care to sit, but you keep going straight past the bench and follow the little trail ahead to a dead tree across the trail. Stop, and look right to a pine. Under rocks behind the pine is Tanner’s Beach Ball.
Go back to the intersection with White and Red Diamonds at that huge tree. Continue south on the White Diamond and pass through a lovely cool Evergreen Forest. At the end of the trail, and the sign for Raven’s Woods, turn around and walk north on the trail to a tree with a white blaze and a small unmarked trail on the right. Don’t take the unmarked trail, but notice a clearing on the left and a stone wall to the west. Go to the wall from that clearing and find a large tree on the other side of the wall. Colin’s Sand Bucket is on the east side of the wall just to the right of that large tree, and behind a moss covered trap door, where a dead tree leans over the wall.
Continue north on the White Diamond Trail as it takes you back past the intersection of Red Diamond by that huge tree --- and on to the bridge and up to your car.
