This is the first letter box in a series of three. This is the first and only one placed so far.
This letterbox location is really more condusive to driving but for the avid, in shape hiker it can be a beautiful 6 mile round trip hike.
From Hwy 1 take Carmel Valley Road- East, 6.01 miles. You will pass Mid Valley Shopping Center on the left or south of C.V. Road. Take the Robinson Canyon Road exit to the right. Pass St. Dunstans Church and Carmel Valley Ranch,(on the left) keep going. One half mile from Carmel Valley Road
you can park your car on the side of the road on the right. If you want to hike, this is the best place to park. Please be aware there is some car traffic on this road but you can hear cars coming from a distance and the walk is really beautiful. We reccomend an early morning walk or later afternoon as mid day temperatures can be warm. The canyon is a steep climb and a twisty road, take your time if you are driving.
Drive or hike 3.1 miles up the canyon. You will come to a hairpin turn that goes right. Pull over and park on the right side of the road at the crest of that hairpin turn.
Stand on the south side of the road. Look for two medium boulders on the side of the road. Face the boulders. Turn left 90 degrees. Walk 18 steps east. On the right is a rock wall with a tree root growing on its face. Directly under the root, under 3 granite rocks is where the box waits for you.
Be sure to walk up the road another 200 yards around two bends and see Whale Rock. It is a little faded but the whale's eye still keeps watch.
Please be aware the poison oak is everywhere this time of year and snakes can be basking in the sun. We placed this box in a safe location with no poison oak or snakes... was'nt that nice of us. Have Fun !!!!
