American hobos of the late 19th and early 20th centuries communicated important information about a locale with chalk drawings on buildings, sidewalks, fences and railroad trestles. The symbols are very creative and several have somewhat humorous meanings. We will periodically celebrate this imaginative tradition by placing a Hobo Sign box at railroad related sites.

This box is placed at Riverside Park and Ralph Mitchell Zoo. There’s a fun playground and the zoo is free. The miniature passenger train in the park is only 25 cents a ride.

Directions to park:
From the corner of Oak St. and Hwy. 75 (Penn), go east about two blocks. Turn left into the driveway just past the pool and before the airplane. Drive past the mini golf course and kiddie passenger train. You will see a sign for Ralph Mitchell Zoo. Park here.

Directions to box:
Follow the sidewalk to the locomotive engine. The front of the train says “Baldwin Locomotive Works Philadelphia, PA 1902.” Climb up into cab, and work your way around to the right hand side of the controls. The box is hidden up in a slot in the roof over your head.
