2/22/07 - Two boxers have attempted to find this box. We think that the trails have been moved so the clues are not matching up. I am listing this as missing for now. In Idaho and unable to check at this time. Sorry!

Special Notes: The Multi-Use Kahakapao Loop Trail in the Makawao Forest Reserve is where "Echo Gecko" is hiding. The trail was opened on June 4, 2005. Organizations who helped prepare the trail include Na Ala Hele staff, Na Ala Hele volunteers, citizens of nearby Makawao town, Maui Bicycle Alliance members, Oahu Sierra Club members, and many others. To help construct more trails and maintain existing ones contact Na Ala Hele at http://www.hear.org/volunteer/maui/naalahele or call (808)873-3509.

Trail Notes: Small children might tucker out quickly. We took two ten year olds on the entire hike. A large percentage of the trail is up hill. The incline is gradual but it is still uphill. Even though the path is easily marked and well maintained I would not recommend it for tiny tots. The actual trail runs about 2 1/2 miles. About 3/4 of the way you end your forest trek at a service road and walk back down the trail via the service road. Footing on the way down can be a little difficult and rocky. After locating "Echo Gecko" you can either turn around and head back to your car or take the entire trail loop and enjoy the forest.

Directions: Your starting point is the town of Makawao. You can reach the heart of Makawao town from Baldwin Avenue and/or Olinda Road. From the town of Makawao head north on Makawao Ave. You will pass St. Jospehs Church on your right. Turn right on to Piiholo Road. Travel approximately 1.5 miles. Turn left on the Waiahiwi Road. Turn right on to Kahakapao Road. Park outside the silver gate with the brown sign that reads "Entering Makawao Forest Reserve." It is very important to park outside the gate because it can be closed at any time. When we arrived it was open. When we left it was closed. Better safe than sorry!

You will walk .6 miles on a paved road up to a little hut and a small brown sign that points the direction to follow to the trail. This paved road is really a steep walk. You will then walk approximately .2 miles to the actual trail head. We laughed because it was a bit of a hike to get to the trail head before even starting the hike. You will encounter a sign tht says "Kahakapao Look Trail Head 100 yards." And then you will come to the actual trail and a sign that reads "Kahakapao Loop Trail."

From this point you will hike approximately 1/4 of a mile and at your first switch back you will stop at the point of the switch back. Heading south you will take 14 steps or 7 paces off the path and past a clustering of ferns on your left. You should be standing in front of two large boulders. Hidden in-between the crack under a pile of smaller rocks you will find "Echo Gecko" hiding.

Enjoy your visit and hike on the Kahakapao Trail. Should you note the box missing, it’s contents in bad repair or if you just want to say “hi” please contact me at Blackvelvetrav@yahoo.com. I am from Idaho and may need help with box maintenance should you encounter a problem. Aloha and happy hunting!
