SNOW FRIENDS

These letterboxes are hidden in the State Park nestled around one of the twin cities largest ski areas. There is a $7 entry fee, or you can purchase a State Park Pass for $25 which is good in all Minnesota state parks for one year (highly recommended). Please remember to bring water. The hike is over moderate terrain, albeit on well groomed trails. The hike is 2-2.5 miles and should take 1.5 hours (not including stamp time). Enter the park at its main entrance at the end of 20. Drive to the end of the road and park when you can’t drive any further. If you would like, stop at the visitor’s center along the way and pick up a park map.

Your trek begins at the information kiosk in the upper picnic area (this is visible from the parking lot). Take the paved path through the upper picnic area toward the Saint Croix River. Keep the river on your right and stay on the widest paved path. Follow the hiking trail route. Stop at the lookout for a great view and continue down the stairs. Make a right at the bottom of the stairs; the paved path ends right before a bridge. Continue over the bridge to a 5 way stop next to the lower picnic area.

PENGI: Follow the sign to “campground” straight ahead and uphill. Pass a bench at an overlook. Keep going up. Immediately after the path turns left look right (if you hit the blue marker you’ve gone a little to far). 25 paces into the woods is a large 3-pronged birch tree Pengi is wedged between a fallen log and the prong furthest from the trail. He is hiding from the storm. Be sure to hide him well, he’s easily scared.

SAL: Back to the trail and keep heading up, you’re almost to the top. At the top, pass the pack-in sites and go through the prairie. There is a place to stop and get water as you hike through. As soon as you leave the prairie there is a path, straight ahead (the one you are on goes left), that leads to a pine forest and another map. At the map go east 80 paces from the center of the intersection. There is a fallen tree on the left 23 paces into the wood. The tree makes a 45-degree angle to the ground. Sal is at the middle of its feet behind a piece of wood. Be sure to cover him back up so he doesn’t melt.

PEEPS: Continue east. More prairies, more pine forests...keep going. Stop at the bench overlooking the river for a great view. The path will turn right here. About 70 paces from the bench you will see a perfect hiding spot on your left in a hole in a tree and a lightning kissed trunk on your right (both are about 10 paces from the trail). From the burnt trunk walk perpendicular to the path 60 paces into the woods (you should be heading away from the river). There is a tree with a large hole in its base. Peeps lives under the debris in this hole.

To get home go back to the path. Keep the river to your left and you will end up back at the lower picnic area (you just made a big loop). As you follow the path back you will pass under a footbridge. Under the bridge and to your right there is a map in case you get turned around on your way back. From here there will be signs pointing you back to the parking lot. Happy Hunting!
