Puzzle Difficulty: Easy
Terrain Difficulty: Moderate
Estimated Time: 45 – 90 Minutes
Directions to Falls to Ruins starting location:
Turn right out of the Stowe Inn parking area. Cross the bridge and turn left onto Route 100. Travel a little over three miles and turn right onto Randolph Road. After .4 miles, turn right onto Moss Glenn Falls Road. After .5 miles, the road will turn sharply and you will see a sign for 'C.C. Putnam State Forest.' Park here.
Falls to Ruins Instructions:
From Mr. Putnam's sign, follow the path along the river until you find a most dangerous sign. Please heed its warning as you explore this beautiful area.
Follow the network of trails uphill. At one point you will use a stone staircase followed soon after by a root staircase. Continue to follow the wavering trail until you join with a much wider trail at the top.
Look for two yellow arrows that seem to point at each other. From these arrows, follow the trail upstream 250 steps to a trail intersection on the right. Off to your right is an old beaver dam area, but that does not contain the treasure you seek.
Continue to follow the main trail upstream another 210 steps. There will be a trail intersection on the left, and a giant pine tree on the right hand side.
From the large pine, continue on the main trail 195 steps to where a culvert is buried beneath the trail. There will be an open swampy area to your left.
From the culvert, walk sixty steps and then stop. Turn to your right. Thirty feet ahead is an old stone foundation.
Stand with your back to the long wall of the foundation closest to the trail. The specific spot is found by standing where the long wall is bisected by the inner wall that separates the deep cellar from the unexcavated foundation walls.
Thirty steps ahead is a large rock with a quartz vein running through it, just across the main trail. From the large rock, turn ninety degrees to the left. Twenty feet ahead you'll find the letterbox in a ring of stones. Congratulations!
