Box update from recent visitors: We were there July 26, 2008 & the box was still intact! The rocks had moved so we rehid it behind a coconut shell in a little alcove & then replaced the white rocks in front of it. (It's still at the 28th step). We were lucky & found a hitchhiker, too! Thanks for a beautiful walk!

Special Notes: Wai'anapanapa "glistening waters" State Park in Hana is where “Seahorse Sally” is hiding. This 122-acre state park encompasses a lovely black sand beach, dramatic sea caves, natural stone arch, campground, hiking trails, and remnants of the first road built around the island, the old King's Highway. The black-sand beach is lovely but dangerous for swimming due to strong currents and a rocky reef. Black sand is the result of lava flowing into the ocean and shattering when it comes in contact with the cool water. The volcanic pieces are then smashed against each other and the shoreline with each wave, thus creating the black sand. There is a stone bridge, and, a short hike away, the huge smooth volcanic tubes or caves. If you are traveling with children there are restrooms available. There is another box located at the park called “Visiting Mountain God.” Although we did not go far enough on our hike to locate the box make sure to print the clues and search for both while you are there.

Directions: Located off Highway 360E (Hana Highway), just beyond mile maker #32, is a paved road on the left. The state park is at the end of this road.

Clues: Once you enter the state park head to the second parking lot to your left. It points the way to the Black Sands Beach and other park features. There is a Trail Loop to the left of the parking lot. Follow the trail to the right which immediately takes you under a unique and thick canopy of yellow flowers. Take special note as you make your decent to count each step (including long landing steps) and stop at the 28th step. You will be a little over half way down the canopy starting your count from the top. Turn to your left and “Seahorse Sally” is hiding behind several small rocks (one of them is white) against the wall of rocks.

Enjoy your visit and short hike at Wai'anapanapa at the State Park. Should you note the box missing, it’s contents in bad repair or if you just want to say “hi” please contact me at Blackvelvetrav@yahoo.com. I am from Idaho and may need help with box maintenance should you encounter a problem. Aloha and happy hunting!
