Labyrinths have an old and magical history, dating back centuries. They are used for meditation and contemplation. Houston is lucky to have a walking labyrinth in one of its city parks, Sylvan Rodriguez Park in Southern Houston near Clear Lake.

We visited the park at sunset and to watch the setting sun as we walked the labyrinth was a fantastic experience. This park gets quite a breeze, so even on a hot sticky summer evening, it was pleasant. (We've been here in the winter and then the wind seems a bit cold). In addition to the labyrinth, there are portals for watching sunrise and sunset on the summer and winter solstice dates.

Directions:
From I-45, take Exit 29, Clear Lake City Blvd. Head east. Go .2 miles past Galveston Road (Highway 3) and you will see the entrance on the left. Follow the road to the parking area.

Clues:
Find the labyrinth. Read the plaque or count the number of trees that surround the labyrinth. Walk the labyrinth to the center. From the very center, look due north (magnetic). You should see a granite bench on the other side of the lake. Go to that bench. Behind it is a grassy trail (with brambles, sandals aren’t such a good idea). Walk the number of paces = number of trees surrounding the labyrinth. (One pace = two footfalls). After you walk your paces, to your right, just off the trail should be a tree. The labyrinth box is hanging on a branch in the back of the tree. Reach carefully—lots of thorns here. You may pull the two black beads apart to take the box down from the tree. Please rehide well, taking care that the box is not visible from the trail.

We hope you enjoy this box as much as we did placing it. Feel free to send us an email and let us know how labyrinth is faring.
